Chrono & Robo we're made pretty in Adobe Photoshop CS5/Illustrator. All characters are properties of SquareEnix.

Anyway, I always wondered what Stefanie's designs would look like if they we're lined up. So, I then decided to re-ink & touch up the colours for Chrono & printed Stefanie's rough pencil drawing for Robo & tightened it up. This exercise was also done to test out some of the custom brushes that I recently got for Photoshop.

The oni demon was cooked up when I was reading a book on Japan's history & myths.

This is an Easter Bunny that was created for Bob's design class. In this assignment, he wanted our bunny design that had a definite personality, along with it's appearance reflecting its personality.

For me, I was designing my goofy-lookin' bunny with the following goals in mind:

-Had a balance of internal and external negative space
-It was functional.
-The design should have a basic visual description of the personality of the character
-The design was appealing to look at.

I sadly didn't hit all the marks, but what can you do, right?

Character Design & Poses #5: The Pirate

After the University closed down for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, I had no access to a scanner (hence my absence.)Anyway, before the break started, Bob requested us to design a pirate captain as the lead character for a cartoon series. It could be male or female, it’s a must for it to be cartoony, and it should be fully dressed (read: no bare upper torso for the male characters.)

I had done a vast amount of research for my character, such as studying some notable pirate designs (Frank Thomas’s Captain Hook, Marc Davis’s designs for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, N.C. Wyeth’s Treasure Island paintings, and so forth.) It was also recommended for me to watch a heapin’ lot of live-action pirate films (Treasure Island, The Sea Hawk, Captain Blood, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.) for some good reference sources for clothing.

Unlike for my other designs, I had a clear idea for what I wanted my pirate to look like. My pirate’s appearance is loosely based off of Wallace Beery, a notable American actor that is known for the 1931 film, The Champ. He had the right look and body type for the basis of my design, and that was where it started off.

The following images below are the two poses for my Olympic mascot, as well as a bonus doodle that I did after our boys won the gold medal for men's Ice Hockey against the United States.

Character Design & Poses #1: Tex Avery Character

The production model sheet above was used for the Tex Avery cartoon, Henpecked Hobos (1942). The character Jr. (that large, dumb bear) has the features of your typical "dumm" character for your typical Avery cartoon.

Note: It wasn't until now that I had forgot to pose this character. My apologies in advance.

In this first assignment, Bob had wanted us to design a character that's in the vain of your Tex Avery dumb type. The purpose of the assignment is for the character to have structure, a sense of balance and weight, and a hierarchy.

I wanted to design a large, ugly looking female (something that's in the vain of the frumpy looking pet owner in the '46 cartoon, Lonesome Lenny.)

All in all, Bob loved the sheer stupidity of my large female. The problem, however, was that both poses could easily have it topple over. So, after writing down Bob's advice, I soon went to work and came out with the following:

Character Design #5: Speedy Poses and Winter Mascot

This time around, Bob wanted us to design an animal character that would star/ represent an animated commercial for the Winter Olympics (and winter sports, in general.) It has to have appeal, but should promote the "fun" factor of winter sports.

Also this week, he wanted us to pose our character revamp in two poses, which sould reflect what the character would do in a typical situation that is derived from that classic cartoon series.

All in all, both were fun assignments. My red-tail fox is a very poor attempt to design it, as Ed Benedict himself would have. Well, I'll ask Bob for some advice on how to improve the design after tommorow's class.

Character Design & Poses #4: Character Revamp

My final design for the assignment and Bob's notes to fix up my mistakes.

For this assignment, Bob had given our class the task to update the design of a classic cartoon character, and to figure out what makes it work. Basically, this exercise is supposed to flex our design skills to add something new to it.

So, I went and watched Speedy's catalog of cartoons (I avoided the cartoons that stared Speedy and Daffy. Horrid stuff....) and did studies of the said character.

For my final, had taken elements from the 1953 prototype Speedy. It's nose, buck teeth, thick eyebrows, round cheeks and saucer-eyes where the elements that worked well for the original. However, I kept its clothes, whiskers and tail from the 1955 revision.

Since I wanted to make my Speedy to be a cute little rascal, I shrunk him town (he measures at about 2 heads in height, four if you add the large hat) and enlarged the hat. That way, it would emphasize his cuteness.

All in all, Bob liked it as a whole. He was quick to note that Speedy's hat seemed tacked on. He also notice that Speedy was missing his right ear, and felt that both ears should be more at an angle. After giving me the necessary notes, I soon went to work fixing my mistakes.

Character Design & Poses #3: 1930's Character

The above image of Betty and the cacti were drawn by Grim, himself. The doodles that surround the image are mine, which are studies from the classic cartoon, "Mysterious Mose."

The purpose of this assignment (due to Bob's disappointment of our class's ability to properly use construction) was to design a character that could of existed in a 1930's theatrical short. It should have proper hierarchy and construction.

Since I was fed-up with designing large characters, I wanted to do something that was "cute, girlish."

So, it was off researching/ drawing/ analyzing the cartoons from that era (Swing, You Sinners!, Mysterious Mose, Balloon Land, Toby Tortoise Returns, etc.) as well for some of the comic greats (Otto Messure, and so forth.)

Most importantly, however, was that I was studying the bulk of the work that was done by Grim Natwick, one of my heroes.

The image above was a slow, careful study from the Ub Iwerks cartoon, "Funny Faces."

The image above is what came out, after several hours of studying Fleischer cartoons. However, while Bob liked it, he believed (and he was right, I might add) that it was too "Spumco-ish."

Bob, being the awesome Fleischer geek that he his, had recommend me to watch the "lost" Betty Boop cartoon, "Buzzy Boop," as that title character had the qualities that would help my design ten-fold.

Sadly, the final design is in Bob's possession. However, I do have the two poses that were made for this assignment.

Character Design & Poses #2: The Geek and Avery Character Poses

For this assignment, our character design teacher (Bob Jaques) assigned us to draw a nerd-type of character, without resorting to the standard clichés of the classic archetype.

So, with that in mind, I went to every possible comic book shop (great gathering places for nerds, such as myself) and focused on what makes a nerd, well...nerdy.

Believe it or not, the final image (above) is a semi-caricature of a guy who works at "Big Pete's Comic Book Shop," which is located near the Lonsdale area. I find it funny that the guy was fat all over the place, which was something I wanted to emphasise for my design. Also, he had stocky legs which (sadly) I had taken out in the final design.

Overall, Bob loved it (the man tits, especially) but he did give me notes for where I should improve it:

-Give him love handles, which wrap around the form of the subject.

-Define the pocket on the pants

-Don’t make the shoes as graphic; think more solid shapes.

Take note that his corrections are in black pencil.

The second part of the assignment was to take one of the classes designs (I choose Gaston's beaver) and put it in two different poses:

-The character was angry, and is about to throw a punch

-The character is hanging on a rope, 1000 feet in the air, and is clinging for his life.

-Balancing thick and thin on Sody's hip's and left hand.
-Need to figure out the shape of that tassel for George's hat.

UPDATE: After John was able to critique my first attempt (thanks, teach!), I've taken his advice to heart and corrected my mistakes, along with discovering new ones that are subtle (such as the corner on George's jaw, the curve on his nose, and so forth). For some reason, the Photoshop program wouldn't allow me to thin the irises.

Oh, well, you can't win them all, correct?

Just for fun, I was doing one of the lessons in Tom Brancroft book, Creating Characters With Personality. It's considered to be the best book out there on the subject of character design.

In the first lesson, it instructed the artist (me) to design a cast of characters that would fit in a 1850's mid-western setting. For the protagonist, it's template would be in the vain of a Bob Hope or a similar goofy lookin' hero.

When working on this hellbent for leather cowpoke, I was thinking of the many actors that stared in westerns, namely Gene Wilder, George O' Brein & Guinn "Big Boy" Williams.

I later on added a character comparison, which included (from left to right) the hero, love interest, the hero's horse, the antagonist's henchman & the villain himself.

It's EDDIE!

This is a caricature (done by me) of one of my favorite modern cartoonist's, Eddie Fitzgerald. Eddie, who has worked for just about every studio in Hollywood (such as Warner Brother's Tiny Toon Adventures, Bakshi’s Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, Spumco’s Ren & Stimpy, Christmas In TatterTown, and so forth), has a well-known laugh - and lots of theories about classic animation, drawing, and life itself.

To the best of my knowledge, he is the humblest, and funniest, guys that I have ever known. He is also one of the many artists that had inspired me, not only in the arts, but just about anything you can possibly think of. (He even offered me advice on my portfolio, once.)

One of these days, I'll hopefully be able to meet Eddie in person.

Cheer's to you, Mr. Fitzgerald, for that you have inspired me in ways that I can't explain without being long-winded.

My 800 Pound Gorilla

For our next assignment in our "Character Design" class, we had to design an original character & then sculpt it into a maquette. For my design, I wanted to a gorilla. Problem being, is that I knew little to nothing on how a gorilla is constructed, how it moves, etc. So, to get a better understanding, I went to the University's library & delve into every possible book (with pictures, preferably) on gorillas, namely the African silver-back Gorilla.

I also went online (a la YouTube) to study from recorded film stock of the silver-back, just to get a better idea for how this mysterious, yet wickedly awesome creature moves & interacts with it's environment.

Anyway, here are some pretty pictures, from study to final, on my Champ.

Character Design Assignment

A simple assignment, really.

Analyze the three characters that are presented on the model sheet (their shape, how their design is in harmony to one-another, contrasts, etc.)

Then you'll have to create a fourth member of the cast, and make sure the design "fits" the group in terms of design, style & presentation. (It was also crucial for the new character to look like it was designed by the same person.)

The characters for this assignment were from one of my favourite Tex Avery cartoons, Deputy Droopy. These three, along with the ugly redesign of Droopy (not shown) were done by the famous Ed Benedict, a phenomenal character designer that's best known for designing the primary cast for "The Flintstones."

I was first trying to work on the shapes of my character. At this point, it was a toss-up between a dancer, a burly thug, & a Deputy. I liked the profile for the young hero, so I went with the Deputy.

I then went back to the model sheet, and try to see how Ed's designs "clicked," picking up elements of what I liked. For my Deputy, I wanted him to have a lean, yet strong build, as a contrast to the egg/ oval shaped Sheriff. The design also had a bit of lucky Luke & Richard Widmark.

Here's the final rough for my hero. I think he goes well among Ed's gang of crooks and sheriff. What do you guys think?
